2020 Insect Update

16 January 2020

New insect invading our area:

The  SPOTTED LATERNFLY  has been found in multiple New Jersey counties. This invasive Asian insect was first discovered in the US in 2014 in Berks County Pennsylvania. The Spotted Lanternfly feeds on more than 70 species of trees, but the main host tree is Ailanthus. They feed on the trunk and limbs, by sucking fluids from the phloem tissue. They then excrete honey dewwhich will cause sooty mold fungus. Sooty mold also affects nearby plant material by limiting their ability to photosynthesize, reducing vigor. Besides the stress it puts on the tree and nearby plants, the honey dew will leave a sticky film on nearby vehicles, patios, decks, outdoor furniture or any other objects under affected trees. We suggest treating all susceptible trees with a soil/bark applied systemic insecticide. A topical spray may also be suggested to help knock down heavy infestations. Ticks:

There are 3 different types of ticks that carry diseases in New Jersey; Deer tick, Lone star tick and American dog tick. Ticks are commonly found in wooded areas, underbrush areas and mulch beds. According to New Jersey Dept. of Health, last year there were nearly 4000 new cases of Lyme disease in New Jersey. Greenwood recommends a tick program to help suppress the insects in your yard. A typical program will consist of (4) treatments per year, the programs are customizable and the number of treatments can be increased or decreased depending on your property and insect pressure.
