A good-looking lawn starts with healthy soil and the right fertilizer routine. With a professional lawn care service, your grass gets the nutrients it needs without guesswork. Experts use balanced fertilizers and know how to test your lawn, so your grass can grow thick and strong. This means fewer brown patches and better color, making your property stand out.

Weeds can be a big problem, especially when they keep coming back every year. A professional lawn care service uses the correct weed control methods to deal with pests, dandelions, and crabgrass. Instead of trying different products from the store, your lawn gets a custom treatment plan. This means fewer chemicals, safer grass, and less trouble for you.

Lawns in Morris Plains change with every season, so it’s important to follow the right steps throughout the year. Aerating at the right time helps the soil breathe and encourages strong roots. Seeding fills in thin patches and keeps the grass growing thick and green. Applying the right treatments in each season helps the lawn handle tough weather, like dry summers or cold New Jersey winters. With proper care year-round, your grass stays healthy and looks its best no matter the season.

Vacations and busy schedules mean lawns sometimes get ignored, and it’s easy to fall behind on yard work when life gets hectic. With a professional lawn service, you do not have to worry about missing a mowing or a week of watering if it rains too much or equipment stops working. Your grass receives regular, dependable care, so it stays green and healthy no matter how often you travel or get tied up with other commitments. This gives you peace of mind, knowing your yard will always look neat and cared for.

Maintaining equipment like a lawn mower, weed eater, and sprayer requires time, effort, and extra storage space. Not having to buy, store, or repair these tools means less hassle and fewer chores to worry about. With all the heavy lifting and cleanup handled, you can enjoy a neat, tidy lawn and more free space in your garage.

Using the wrong chemicals or cutting your grass too short can do more harm than good and might even put your family or pets at risk. Professional lawn care teams know which products are safe and when to use them. They make sure treatments are carefully applied so it is safe for kids and pets to enjoy the yard. They also know how to protect your flowers, trees, and gardens while keeping your whole lawn healthy and worry-free.

Trees are more than just a backdrop for your home—they are living assets that contribute to your property’s value and the overall health of your neighborhood. Trees help clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, provide shade that reduces cooling costs in the summer, and offer habitat for local wildlife. However, without proper maintenance, trees can become liabilities.

Morristown’s climate can be harsh on trees, with seasonal storms, heavy winds, and fluctuating temperatures affecting their health and stability. Dead branches or overgrown limbs not only reduce your trees’ vitality but can also threaten your home and safety during storms. Cracks in the Trunk or Roots: Visible damage can threaten the entire tree’s stability.

Problem: When trees stop being an asset and become a liability

You planted that oak in the front yard 15 years ago, hoping for shade and beauty. Now it’s leaning toward your house, roots cracking your driveway, and branches are rubbing against power lines. Or maybe your maple’s leaves have gone yellow too early—again. Sound familiar?

Unhealthy or poorly maintained trees aren’t just ugly. They’re dangerous. One strong gust or heavy snowstorm, and that massive limb might end up in your living room. Worse, your homeowner’s insurance may not cover it if neglect is proven.

Agitation: Ignoring the warning signs only makes things worse.

Think you’ll deal with it “next season”? That delay could cost you thousands. Invasive pests like emerald ash borers spread quickly, hollowing out healthy-looking trees from the inside. And decay isn’t always obvious. By the time you see fungi at the base, it might be too late to save it—or your fence, car, or roof.

DIY pruning? It often leads to improper cuts that weaken your tree’s structure. And that "cheap" tree company? If they aren't licensed, insured, or local, you could be stuck with half-finished work or damaged property.

Tree Pruning: Enhancing Growth and Strength

            Regular pruning

is one of the most effective ways to ensure your trees remain in top condition. Removing weak, diseased, or overgrown branches prevents potential hazards and encourages new growth. Well-pruned trees are also more resistant to harsh weather conditions, reducing the risk of falling limbs.

Incorporating proper pruning techniques helps trees thrive while maintaining an appealing landscape. Strategic cutting methods guide growth patterns and improve structural integrity, which is crucial for longevity. Keeping up with routine trimming also enhances airflow and light penetration, promoting overall tree health.

Seasonal Tree Maintenance for Long-Term Health

Trees require different care depending on the season. In spring and summer, they experience active growth, requiring nutrient-rich soil and hydration. Fall is ideal for pruning, as trees enter a dormant state, allowing for better wound recovery. Winter maintenance includes preventive measures to protect against frost damage.

A consistent care routine ensures trees stay healthy year-round, minimizing the need for emergency removal or intensive treatments. Adapting to each season’s demands keeps your landscape thriving no matter the weather conditions.

The Importance of Regular Tree Inspections in Residential Tree Services

Routine inspections help detect early signs of disease, pest infestations, or structural instability. Identifying these issues in advance allows for timely intervention, preventing extensive damage.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2025 SPRING OUTLOOK

Start the year right with expert spring tips for tree removal and lawn maintenance. Greenwood Tree & Lawn offers 2025's top advice for healthy outdoor spaces in your area.

Most of the growing season this year was extremely dry, with October being the driest month on record! Drought affects trees in numerous ways. Lack of water causes trees to be more susceptible to insect and disease issues, reduces growth and vigor, as well as causes fine root hairs to die. All these stressors can lead a tree into decline and even death. Drought stress damage is not always immediately displayed while in a active drought, damage may appear months to even years later depending on the age and root size of a tree. Proper mulching and watering deeply once a week or more will go a long way to help a tree during dry periods. Greenwood suggests treating trees to reduce drought stress using a super phosphorus and bio-stimulant soil injection, as its essential for overall tree health and vigor.

BLD was again very prevalent this season throughout our area. The past suggestion of keeping the trees as healthy as possible through deep watering during drought conditions, deep root feeding, growth regulator applications and phosphorus applications twice a year is still recommended. We have been seeing promising results with this approach. There are new treatment options that can be applied and show positive results. Give your Arborist a call for more information.

           Replacing Trees

With several new insect and disease issues plaguing and killing our trees, the responsible thing we can do is to replant trees. Trees are important to life and provide numerous benefits to humans, wildlife and the environment. Spring and fall are ideal times to plant trees. Greenwood is your trusted source for your tree planting project.

           Liquid Aeration

Drought causes soils to compact which makes it harder to absorb water, oxygen and nutrients. Compacted soil leads to more insect and disease issues as well as thinning lawns. Traditional core aeration is a tried-and-true way to help break up the soil compaction and let the roots breathe. Liquid aeration is also another option now available in our tool box that can be used in conjunction with the core aeration or a stand-alone application. This is also a great option for lawns with shallow sprinkler lines and underground lighting wires. Liquid aeration is applied to the lawn and starts working immediately by breaking down the thatch layer and reducing soil compaction by softening the heavy clay soil.

           Winter Tree Work = Savings!

Greenwood operates all year, and winter is a great time to have your trees assessed, especially deciduous trees as it’s easier to see into the canopies to identify deadwood and any structural concerns. Winter tree work also has less impact on the landscape and of course the best part of winter tree work is the savings with our off-season rate!

A common misconception is that tree maintenance cannot be done during the winter months, or that tree care companies do not operate during this time of the year.

This has led to a surge of work for commercial tree care companies in the warmer months, and consequently, sometimes longer waits for homeowners trying to get their tree work completed.

While winter weather might make tree maintenance more difficult, there are tree care procedures that can be done during the winter months that will benefit the trees in the subsequent growing season.

“The leafless dormancy period of winter allows the trained arborist to more easily identify [dead or hazardous limbs],” explains Jason Brooks, one of Greenwood Tree Experts’ arborists. “Also, if the ground is frozen, then pruning activities will have a less damaging effect on the functional root zone of a tree.”

“The tree growth (including wound closure) slows significantly and does not begin again until the following spring,” adds Brooks. “Research has shown that optimum would closure is achieved by pruning during the late winter and early spring, right before the flush growth of spring.”

Winter tree work can help minimize potential problems stemming from pruning at the wrong time, such as destructive insects and fungal infections attacking the spot of the wound left by pruning. Pruning during winter months allows for the healing to begin before the warmer months bring on these complications, giving the tree a much better chance of making an uninhibited recovery.

While winter tree work may appeal to the consumer trying to get ahead on their spring cleanup from the tough winter months, trees should be assessed on a case-by-case basis by a trained arborist. Improper timing of your tree’s pruning can lead to further complications, which can cause the tree to become a hazard to nearby residents rather than a beautiful piece of the landscape.

    Keep Fertilizing, Even With Leaves

Keeping a regular fertilizer program schedule is essential to the long-term health of your lawn. Even with leaves covering the ground, you should still fertilize your lawn as long as you can see grass blades. Fertilizer granules often land on the leaves, however with rain and wind, they soon fall into your soil. This is why Greenwood prefers granular fertilizer over liquid, ensuring that your lawn will receive the proper nutrients even if there are leaves on the ground.

    Why Fall Fertilizers are Essential

Fall fertilizers are very important to the overall health of your lawn, and should not be skipped at all costs. The fertilizer application we provide our customers with in September and early October allows for rapid root re-growth and re-establishment of your turf after a harsh summer. The fertilizer application we apply in November gives your roots the ability to store carbohydrates in the turf plants cell walls, helping it withstand the harsh winter, and providing food for an early spring green-up.

Matted Leaves Not Only Effect Fertilizer

The only time Greenwood recommends that we hold off fertilizing is when the leaves are so matted, no grass blades are showing. If this is the case in your lawn, you’ll want to remove the leaf cover to allow for oxygen to reach your turf. If allowed to remain over your lawn, this leaf cover can choke out your turf, and lead to snow mold problems over winter. After removal, a normal fertilizer application can be applied.

So, you’re about to grab your favorite sweater and head to the pumpkin patch when you hear what sounds like a few small voices floating from your yard.

          “We’re hungryyyyyyyyy.”

This sounds super weird, but it’s your trees and shrubs.

It’s time for fall tree and shrub fertilizer.

That’s right, even after a spring and summer of eating, your trees and shrubs need more food, even as the growing season winds down. (They’re kind of like teenagers.)

What are the benefits of fall fertilization?

Your trees and shrubs usually soak up fertilizer and use it to put out new leaf growth.

But in the fall, their roots take those nutrients and use them to boost their health.

And those roots are really important, absorbing the water and nutrients your trees and shrubs need to thrive.

If you had super x-ray vision and could see through the ground, you’d be amazed. There are thousands of roots down there, stretching out even farther than your tree’s canopy.

In the woods, leaves and woody debris stay on the forest floor, decomposing and providing rich tasty fertilizer for all those lucky trees.

But here in lawn land, we rake those natural nutrients up and haul them away.

Meanwhile, your greedy lawn is a serious competitor, gobbling up nutrients that your trees and shrubs need, too.

Give them their own fall tree and shrub fertilizer to level the field.

Summer is tough on your trees and shrubs. All that growing takes a lot out of them.

They’ve been busy providing shade, being home to birds and squirrels, producing berries for birds.

Kind of makes you feel like a slacker in comparison, right?

All that hard work uses up a lot of nutrients. Fall tree and shrub fertilizer replaces them.

Speaking of hard work, imagine completely changing your color every fall.

If you love those vibrant golden, orange, and crimson leaves, make sure your trees and shrubs are healthy enough to produce them.

When a tree doesn’t have enough nutrients, you can see it in weak, dying leaves — even before they have a chance to turn color and drift to the ground naturally.

If you notice yellowing leaves long before the fall color change, that’s a sign your tree is struggling and needs a nutrient boost.

You want your trees and shrubs to stick around, right?

When your trees and shrubs struggle to get the important nutrients they need, they get weak. That makes them more susceptible to damaging insects and diseases.

Struggling trees and shrubs won’t grow as tall or as full as they could, either.

Don’t wait for problems to set in. Then, it could be too late.

Fertilizing your trees and shrubs in fall is a lot easier — and cheaper — than replacing them.

We know, you’ve barely slurped your first sip of pumpkin spice latte and here we are asking you to think about spring. But fall tree and shrub fertilizer is as much about spring as it is about fall. They store this fall feeding in their roots, so the nutrients are available in the spring for important new growth.

Fertilize your trees and shrubs in the fall to get them through the winter and emerge vibrant and ready to grow in the spring.

No time to fuss with all that? We don’t blame you. There’s a lot of pumpkin spice stuff out there to sample.

One frequently asked lawn care question we get each year pertains to a peculiar wheat-like growth in lawns. Fortunately, it’s not a weed, but a seed head! A seed head is a standard component of the grass life cycle that occurs every spring in our region. All grasses generate seed heads at some stage during the growing season as a means for reproduction and survival.

Seed heads vary in shape and size based on the grass species. The timing of seed head production in the grass life cycle also differs among plants. Some grass species, like Annual Bluegrass and Rough Stalk Bluegrass, produce seed heads early in spring, while others, such as annual ryegrass, may produce seed heads later in the season. Seed heads connect to a stalk that emerges from the grass plant’s center, resembling tiny wheat plants. The number of visible seed heads on a lawn depends on the grass varieties and the mowing frequency. Seed head production typically lasts 2-4 weeks. Although homeowners often mistake seed heads for weeds, they are simply a part of the grass life cycle.

Producing seed heads demands energy from the grass plant, possibly resulting in a temporary color lightening. The turf appears stemmy due to seed stalks and temporary thinning of the turf stand. These issues will eventually resolve as the plants grow and progress to the next phase in the grass life cycle. Regular watering and fertilization can help accelerate recovery.

Since seed heads are crucial for grass species’ survival, lawns with stressed areas may produce a higher density of seed heads. There is no chemical control or prevention for seed heads since they are part of the grass’s natural life cycle. However, some strategies can improve the lawn’s appearance during seed head growth.

If your lawn contains wheat-like plants, don’t worry—this is a standard part of the grass life cycle. The timing and quantity of seed heads produced depend on grass varieties and environmental conditions. Proper watering and fertilization can enhance the turf’s appearance while producing seed heads and promote faster recovery.

During the beautiful summer months while everyone is out enjoying the nice weather, we tend to forget about how hard our trees and shrubs are working to grow. Despite any environmental conditions they can face over the long summer days (drought, intense heat) plants spend all of their time trying to absorb key nutrients any way they can.

It is also very important to keep in mind that trees and shrubs in your landscape are under and lot more stress compared to trees in the forest, where nutrients are readily available.

When tree and shrub fertilization is done correctly in the fall all the necessary nutrients will be restored. In a short time plants will go dormant for the winter, all the extra nutrients will be stored and will be ready for use next growing season!

Boxwood blight is a disease that can quickly ruin a gorgeous landscape. It is a fungal disease spreading quickly across North America. The disease causes black spots to form on leaves, along with elongated black lesions on twigs and stems. Rapid defoliation (in a matter of weeks) soon follows the initial symptoms of infection.

Boxwood blight is often introduced into landscapes on infested nursery stock. Spores of pathogen can easily stick to shoes, clothing, and shearing/pruning tools, so the disease can be easily introduced during routine maintenance. New outbreaks commonly occur following shearing plants in summer.

Moisture on leaves and twigs provides ideal conditions for infection by this fungus so years with high rainfall and extended summer temperatures result in greater disease incidence and severity.

true, It’s hard for many people to believe that improper watering of your lawn can be worse than no watering all. But it’s true; the manner in which many people program their lawn sprinkler system often does more harm to the lawn than good.

Here are the important Do’s and Don’t ‘s of lawn watering:

           Do NOT

start watering too early in the season

. For simplicity, many people feel the need to start using their irrigation systems on the same day of the year each year; say, for example, June 1st. While some years, June 1st may be a completely appropriate date to start watering the lawn, in most years, it is not. This year, 2020, for example, temperatures have been very moderate, and rainfall has been abundant throughout the first half of the month of June. Lawns that have been watered thus far this season, would be more likely to have contracted a fungus disease, like Red Thread, which loves moisture and is very prevalent so far this year. These lawns would also likely produce more weeds, since weed seeds need constant moisture to germinate. But most importantly, premature watering encourages a shallow root system that is unhealthy. This is because, in the spring, when temperatures are moderate and precipitation is plentiful, natural soil moisture extends deep in the soil. In between rainfalls, as the moisture drys out near the soil surface, grass roots will extend downwards to where there is still moisture, and this produces deeper and stronger roots. Conversely, if the grass is irrigated frequently, the roots do not have to grow deep to get to the moisture, and the result is a shallower and weaker root system. And this shallower root system can cause problems when the weather gets hotter and drier over the summer. The bottom line is, watering the lawn only provides benefit when a natural dearth of rainfall and increased air temperature combine to cause stress to the lawn. Otherwise, watering actually can be deleterious to the lawn.

2.) Once conditions warrant that the system should be turned on, DO NOT water each zone for very short periods at a time, for example, 15 minutes to a half an hour, and DO NOT water frequently, for example, every other day .

This is probably the most common mistake people make.

Watering that is too shallow can foster disease and facilitate weed germination, without doing what it is supposed to do, which is to provide sufficient soil moisture for sustainable growth during extended periods of hot and dry weather. If one were to examine the soil after a15 minute, or even a 30 minute cycle of watering, they would see that most irrigation systems will have only
dispensed enough water to wet the surface area of the lawn, and not the soil below. And in times of hot and dry summer weather, this amount of moisture can disperse and evaporate in as little as a couple hours.
This amount of watering is actually NOT better than no watering at all. If no watering occurred, the grass would just go dormant. Yes, it would look a bit brown, but unless there was an unusually harsh drought, the grass would green up when conditions moderated. But grass that was shallowly watered would stimulate new growth that would then become very vulnerable to disease once the grass plant dried out again from the improper watering, and disease under drought conditions can cause serious damage. “Can’t we just treat the disease, then?”, we often hear. Well, sure, but fungicides are expensive, short lived, and are not very effective if the underlying watering issues are not addressed.

The bottom line with programming the watering duration of each zone, is that it should be for a period of time that is sufficient to get the moisture to a depth of 4″-6″deep in the soil, instead of just spritzing the surface. Depending on the output of the system, this could be between one and two hours! When we broach people with this advice, we often hear them retort, ” But i have so many zones. To water my entire lawn would require the system to run all day.” The answer is that the entire lawn doesn’ t need to be watered in one day. A corollary to the advice of increasing the watering duration of each zone, is that the frequency of watering each zone can and should be lessened to once a week, or once every 5 or six days. This means that , ” Section One” could be watered over the course of a few hours on Day 1, and “Section Two” could be watered on Day 2, and so forth. So, instead of watering for a half an hour every other day, one would water for 1.5 to 2 hours every 5 or 6 days. This approach will use about the same amount of total water as the more frequent and shorter watering schedule, but it is a much more efficient use of the water, because the deeper the moisture is able to get into the soil, the more the ground insulates the moisture from quick evaporation. This means it stays in the soil longer and is available to the grass for a longer period. Hence, no burnout!

           3.) Don’t water at night.

Grass that is watered at night does not dry out readily because of the lack of sun and cooler temperatures, and a prolonged period of time that the grass is wet creates a very conducive environment for disease. The best time to water is between 6 AM and 10:30 AM, when temperatures are relatively cooler , but there is still daylight.

It has been quite the beginning to the Spring season and now it’s heating up as we head towards summer. The heavy rains in the month of April and May have created ideal growing conditions for a number of fungal diseases that we are seeing in our urban forest. Many of these diseases are aesthetic issues, but there are some that can become problematic if left unattended.

Apple scab fungus and Diplodia are two prevalent fungal diseases in our local area year after year. They impact Crabapples and select Pine species (primarily Austrian & Scots) respectively. A round of treatments through the Spring and into late June is the best way to handle these issues. As far as Diplodia, planting something other than Austrian or Scots Pine will solve the majority of your problem, but if you have these trees treatments can be effective. Both of these fungal diseases can be impactful to your trees if allowed to occur year after year.

Some additional fungal diseases we are seeing in North Jersey include varying forms of anthracnose, maple leaf blister, and soon to be tar spot on maple trees. These are foliar diseases impacting the leaves of the trees, with anthracnose being the most damaging. Depending on the severity of spread in the tree will determine if treatment is warranted or not. Maple leaf blister and tar spot are primarily aesthetic issues and rarely cause significant impact to the tree.

Symptoms to look for on your trees include spotting on leaves, curling or blistering, or early leaf drop. The good thing about leaf foliar diseases is that the trees will refoliate after an early leaf drop, allowing the tree to continue to grow and produce energy over the growing season. The annual impact of these diseases can become compounding stress on your tree. Greenwood’s Certified Arborist can help you best determine the need for treatment and when.

Wet Springs with cool temperatures are ideal conditions for fungal and foliar diseases. Knowing what to look for and who to cool is your best tool for control. Check out your trees and see if you can identify any of the above symptoms and if so, contact your local plant health care provider to attain appropriate treatment for your trees. Thanks for helping to enhance our urban forest!

has been found in multiple New Jersey counties. This invasive Asian insect was first discovered in the US in 2014 in Berks County Pennsylvania. The Spotted Lanternfly feeds on more than 70 species of trees, but the main host tree is Ailanthus. They feed on the trunk and limbs, by sucking fluids from the phloem tissue. They then excrete honey dewwhich will cause sooty mold fungus. Sooty mold also affects nearby plant material by limiting their ability to photosynthesize, reducing vigor. Besides the stress it puts on the tree and nearby plants, the honey dew will leave a sticky film on nearby vehicles, patios, decks, outdoor furniture or any other objects under affected trees. We suggest treating all susceptible trees with a soil/bark applied systemic insecticide. A topical spray may also be suggested to help knock down heavy infestations.

There are 3 different types of ticks that carry diseases in New Jersey; Deer tick, Lone star tick and American dog tick. Ticks are commonly found in wooded areas, underbrush areas and mulch beds. According to New Jersey Dept. of Health, last year there were nearly 4000 new cases of Lyme disease in New Jersey. Greenwood recommends a tick program to help suppress the insects in your yard. A typical program will consist of (4) treatments per year, the programs are customizable and the number of treatments can be increased or decreased depending on your property and insect pressure.

Recent weather patterns in New Jersey have consisted of excessive rainfall and high wind patterns, resulting in thinner canopy sizes, early fall colors caused by fungal leafspot fungi that parasitized the leaves, or a weakened root system. All of these are indications that this year has been a stressful one for our trees.

Prior to the start of summer, we had approximately 18 months of very wet weather that kept the soil saturated. Saturated soil is generally good when it comes to trees, however, when water is in the soil for a prolonged period, oxygen begins to be displaced. This displacement of oxygen inhibits tree roots from breathing. If oxygen is displaced for too long, the roots will eventually drown and die. Those trees who have experienced this are left with a diminished root system.

We then found ourselves in a very warm start to summer. This dry and hot weather dried out the recently flooded soil. Our trees were desiring water but were unable to gain that water due to lost root system function from drowning.

When trees are weakened, the roots are the first component that must be restored for future growth. Fall fertilization can strengthen your tree roots. Fertilization can improve color and reverse chlorosis (lack of colorful leaves)

A beautiful lawn, the New Jersey dream. Weeds are a buzzkill when it comes to beautiful lawns, but have no fear! Preemergent herbicides are here to help! This treatment will be able to kick out those pesky weeds that leave your lawn looking imperfect and blemished before the weeds have the ability to pop up. A one time treatment could make your lawn practically weed free all year, keeping it looking lush, green, and beautiful.

Weed preventer is simple. All you need is some product and a little bit of time and labor to keep you weeds out of your yard. Let’s make it a goal this year to put down that weed preventer and strengthen your lawn!

      How Preemergent Works

Preemergent is a herbicide that you apply before the weed is able to completely germinate and sprout through the soil. This is a preventative weed control method. If the weed has already started growing outside of the soil, the herbicides will not effectively kill the weeds. If you apply the product appropriately in the spring, your lawn will look awesome for the rest of the year!

      When to Apply Preemergent

Unfortunately, there is no specific time to apply preemergent, especially in New Jersey. The time to apply the product is based on germination of the weeds. The weeds will start to germinate when the daily soil temperature reaches 55 degrees fahrenheit. We know that, here in New Jersey, soil temperature reaching 55 degrees could happen in March or April. It is almost never consistent year to year.

If you apply the treatment too early, the weeds will not be controlled throughout the whole season. This is why it is important to wait until the weeds begin to germinate to put down the pre emergent. Be sure to space out your weed preventer and seeding. Herbicides will kill the new seeds and not allow the new grass to grow. There are products called “weed and feed” that contain the herbicide and fertilizer all in one treatment that you can apply to your already existing grass. The weed and feed will only be effective during the same period of time. After that, you will have to use regular fertilizer on your lawn.

      Crabgrass Preventer

Crabgrass is the most common weed that home owners use preemergent to eradicate in the spring. Crabgrass is a grassy weed that thrives in the summer heat and leaves you lawn looking blemished. It is a weed that grows from one stem with smooth or hairy grass-looking blades that resemble crab legs, hence the name crabgrass.

Crabgrass is able to grow in bare spots in your lawn that have a supply of water and a lot sunlight. This is an annual weed, which means that it spreads by seed, as opposed to spreading through roots. Around the end of summer, the crabgrass seeds and spreads to other areas around your lawn. This is why it is important to take care of crabgrass before it starts to seed and spread.

      Help! I still Have Weeds!

Unfortunately, there will be some weeds that survive the pre emergent herbicide treatment from the early spring. Touch up your lawn throughout the summer with post emergent herbicide. Applying post emergent herbicides to weeds that pop up on your lawn will get rid of them. Try to jump on any weed growth you see as soon as you can. Treating weeds that are actively growing are much easier to kill than those that are more mature. Once growing season comes, check your lawn for growing weeds during mowing to ensure you catch the young weeds early.

The products we use are all EPA regulated and kid and pet friendly. This type of lawn care is good for families that have furry family members and kids that enjoy rolling in the grass. Lawn treatments are customizable for almost all family needs.

Starting April 2017, with the adoption of the Board of Tree Experts Rules, full implementation of the 2010 Tree Expert and Tree Care Operator Licensing Act can occur. Current Certified Tree Experts in good standing with the Board will be converted to Licensed Tree Experts. The Board will start to register businesses and bring Tree Care Operators into the licensing program as well.

The act creates two new license categories for people doing tree work in the state of New Jersey, “licensed tree care operator” (LTCO) and “licensed tree expert” (LTE).

A Licensed Tree Care Operator (LTCO) is a person who has been examined or who has the required experience to be able to acquire the license and is competent in the knowledge and experience of tree pruning, repairing, brush cutting or removal, tree removal, and stump grinding or removal, all with safety in mind. These professionals demonstrate high ethical and moral standards in the practice of tree care and are licensed by the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts. Licensed Tree Care Operators must obtain continuing educational credits over their licensing period, thereby ensuring LTCOs are up-to-date on new information, skills and techniques in the tree care profession.

A business doing tree care in New Jersey has to be approved by the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts and be registered. The registration of the tree care business involves the company demonstrating that it has the required level of insurance and worker compensation coverage found in the administrative rules. The registered business must have at least one licensed person employed. Good news for customers of Greenwood Tree Experts is that we already have to LTE’s, David Dubee #332 and Raymond Woytas #327. A registered business must abide by adopted industry standards and provide safety training for employees and submit safety standards and provide safety training for employees and submit safety documentation annually to the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts.

The Tree Care Operators Licensing rules were adopted to address the serious injuries and fatalities in the arboricutural industry, an increase in unresolved local consumer affairs complaints against tree care companies arising from dishonest ‘fly-by-night’ tree care operations, and the poor arboricultural practices that put tree owners and their properties at risk.

If the rain would stop for more than a moment, we could all venture outside and observe the welcome signs of spring, like birds chirping, and flowers and leaves sprouting. And,unfortunately, we could also observe some of the less welcome signs of spring … , like, Gypsy Moth caterpillars. Last year,Gypsy Moth damage in Rockaway, Jefferson, West Milford and parts of Sussex County was severe, and egg mass counts for this year indicate another infestation will occur in these areas. Areas that are close in proximity to last year’s ‘hot zones’ can also expect to have an increased incidence of damage from this pest, as the insects are spread by wind and other means.

The defoliation that occurs to trees when Gypsy Moth populations are high causes severe stress to trees. Deciduous trees are ‘designed’ to put out one crop of leaves each year. When a tree loses that crop of leaves from Gypsy moths, or any other reason, the tree must expend its ‘reserves’ to grow new leaves. This leaves the tree in a precarious condition.

Properly timed foliar sprays can prevent damage to your trees. Insecticide sprays will kill caterpillars on contact and will also kill caterpillars when they eat the tainted leaves. Naturally occurring bacteria sprays, called, BT, which is short for Bacillus Thuringiensis, are also an effective means to mitigate damage from Gypsy Moth Caterpillars. This material causes an internal reaction in the caterpillar once it eats a tainted leaf.
During severe infestations two treatments of insecticide or BT to your trees is highly recommended. Some areas that were severely affected last year are designated to be aerially treated with BT by the state, and in conjunction with local municipalities. In these designated areas, one additional treatment should suffice. If you would like one of our arborists to assess your property for potential treatment for this pest please call our office at 973-335-6650.

We are proud to announce that Mark Sandor, of Greenwood Tree Experts of Montville, NJ recently completed the Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP) program offered by the Tree Care Industry Association. The CTSP program allows one or more key employees at a given company to become certified tree care safety experts, thereby empowering and encouraging a culture of safety within that organization.

So, well done, Mark! He worked hard to complete this training! We are proud to have him on the Greenwood Tree Experts team. Mark joins the three other CTSP’s we have on staff Mike Hall, Lloyd Lisk and Brad Nilson

      What that means……

Maintaining a Certified Tree Care Safety Professional on staff means that organizations are committed to safe practices in arboricultural operations. CTSP’s are kept abreast of the latest technological advances and regulatory activities affecting the industry through the TCIA safety network, and must commit to ongoing education in the safety field in order to maintain their certification.

Because safety regulations and industry standards are continually evolving, the ongoing education requirement is vital to maintaining a legitimate safety program within a given company. In order to fulfill program requirements, CTSP’s must complete a study guide, attend a two-day training workshop, and pass a rigorous exam. Once certified, CTSP’s must complete at least 30 hours of training others, or receiving education themselves, every three years.

Consumers can have greater peace of mind with the knowledge that hiring a tree care company with a CTSP on staff helps to ensure safe and professional arboricultural work on their property.

Damaging population levels of Gypsy Moth and other leaf feeding insects have been observed in our service area:

Based on observations of Gypsy Moth activity this past year we expect an increase in the population for 2016 in Northwestern areas of Morris and Sussex Counties. As many homeowners know, Gypsy Moth feeding can cause serious harm or damage to trees and shrubs. In addition to the hazard to the plants, anyone who has experienced a past infestation can attest to the “unpleasantness” of the caterpillars and their droppings. When leaf feeding insect populations are this high, damage to trees can be severe.

Gypsy Moths cannot be eradicated but spraying can minimize damage to the landscape. Two sprays are usually sufficient to control damage to trees but in heavy infested areas a third may be necessary.

Along with the leaf feeding insects that damage trees, diseases from insects are becoming more serious — and common!

The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) tracks statistics on tick-transmitted illnesses, and offers advice for staying safe. The CDC recommends applying pesticides in your yard to control tick populations. When applied properly, tick pesticides are extremely effective for tick control.

If you are not already scheduled for treatments for controlling either leaf feeding insects or ticks and would like a price quote or more information on treating these problems, please contact us at (973) 335-6650 to consult with our Certified Arborists.

         Happy New Year!

We hope that 2015 is off to a fabulous start. Our team here at Greenwood is happy to be back at it after a relaxing holiday with our families.
January is the perfect month to start focusing on your landscape needs. For many this is a slow time of the year, the work you do now will pay big dividends come spring.

There are many reasons why winter pruning — also know as dormant landscape pruning — can be an effective and cost-efficient method of ensuring the future health and sustained growth of your valuable trees and shrubs.

Allows For Easier Access to Equipment

During the winter months, because of the harder, frozen ground, heavy equipment can be moved closer to the trees without damaging the roots or soil. This results in cost savings for you because it takes our crew less time and effort to complete the job.

         Stimulates Growth Cycle

Pruning during winter months does not interrupt the nutrient and growth cycle but rather reduces the number of buds that need to share the food resources in the roots, so the remaining buds grow more vigorously the next spring.

Minimizes Damage To The Surrounding Landscape

Pruning during the spring and summer months can often result in damage to the surrounding plants and flowers. It is also very hard to clean the small branches that fall into flowerbeds. Protecting the landscape below the tree completely during pruning is time consuming and can add to the cost of the job.

         Less Risk Of Diseases Spreading

Pruning during winter can reduce the spread of disease that enter the trees from pruning cuts. This is because these diseases are more active during the growing months than in dormant months. Many of the insects that carry the diseases from one tree to another are also not present during the winter season.

Winter pruning has many benefits for your trees and shrubs and it can also save you money. However, it is not recommended for every situation.

Please talk to your Greenwood arborist about your particular landscape so we can help you find the best solution.
